Named for five brothers who died serving together, the USS The Sullivans fought in major Pacific battles and later hunted Soviet subs. In 2022, she nearly sank at her museum dock in Buffalo, but lived to tell the tale.
The Sullivans received nine battle stars for World War II service and two for Korean service. On 7 January 1965, The Sullivans was decommissioned at the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard and she remained in reserve into the 1970s.
Renamed The Sullivans on 6 February 1943, she was sponsored at her launch 4 April by Mrs. Thomas F. Sullivan, mother of the five Sullivan brothers. She commissioned 30 September 1943, Comdr. Kenneth M. Gentry in command.
