由于德国潜艇的编号都用 德文 “Untersee-boot”（意思为“潜艇”，按照英文直译写法为Undersea boat，简称U-boat）的首字母U加数字命名，如U-511。 为了区别于 同盟国 的潜艇（英语为「submarine」），在英语裡使用「U-boat」来称呼德国潜艇。 中文翻译为“U型潜艇”。
The Type IX were German Kriegsmarine U-Boats built by Deschimag, Bremen and other yards for long range ASW warfare during WW2 (about 200 built 1938-45).
Designed in 1935-1936 as large ocean-going U-boats, they were derived from type IA. Diving depth designed as 100m operational and 200m crush depth (many boats went much deeper and survived).
